The Associate in Science degree in Nursing (ANURS/ADN) Program is for individuals with no previous nursing education and who are interested in becoming a registered nurse. The ANURS/ADN Program can be completed within within four semesters and one summer term, after program prerequisites are completed.

Hawai‘i Statewide Nursing Consortium Curriculum
Effective Fall 2012, the KCC Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program will be realigned with the UH-Mānoa Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program via the Hawai‘i Statewide Nursing Consortium Curriculum, thus enabling ADN graduates to continue their nursing education in pursuit of a BSN degree at UH-Mānoa.
In preparation for the Nursing Consortium Curriculum, pre-nursing students must complete ten (10) prerequisite courses by the application deadline, while two (2) co-requisite/support courses may be completed within the KCC ADN program or prior to the application deadline. For a listing of the prerequisite and co-requisite courses, please reference the ADN Self Advising Form situated within the FORMS section within the ADN: Admissions Procedures webpage.
Effective December 1, 2011 through November 30, 2012, ADN program applicants are encouraged to complete the ten (10) prerequisite courses by the application deadline, but will be considered for admissions based on the following six (6) prerequisite courses: Chemistry course requirement; ENG/ESL 100, FAMR 230, MATH 100, ZOOL 141 and ZOOL 141L. All other admissions requirements will still apply.
Effective December 1, 2012 and thereafter, ADN program applicants will be required to complete all ten (10) prerequisite courses by the KCC ADN program application deadlines (i.e., February 1st for Fall entry and September 1st for Spring entry).
**SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT**
New Pre-Admissions Exam for Nursing Program:
Pending final approval by the college, effective March 2012 and thereafter, the Nursing Department at Kapi‘olani Community College (KCC) will administer and accept only the Assessment Technology Institute’s Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI-TEAS) exam to fulfill the pre-admissions exam requirement for the KCC Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program. Students applying to the KCC ADN program and the KCC LPN-RN Transition Program will be required to meet an ATI-TEAS exam adjusted individual total score of 78% or higher to qualify for the ADN or LPN-RN Transition Program.
Students interested in applying to the ADN Program and the LPN-RN Transition Program in the Spring 2013 semester during the application period between June 1, 2012 and September 1, 2012 will be required to complete the ATI-TEAS exam for admissions consideration.
Students currently applying to the ADN Program and the LPN-RN Transition Program in the Fall 2012semester during the application period between December 1, 2011 and February 1, 2012 will be required to complete the NLN-RN Pre-Admissions Exam for admissions consideration.
The implementation of the ATI-TEAS Exam as the pre-admission exam for the ADN program is based on the Nursing Department’s immediate concerns regarding its current resources to administer the pre-admissions exam as well as its concern that ADN applicants are able to access or secure their exam scores in a timely manner, thus ensuring that pre-nursing students are able to complete their applications to the ADN program within a timely manner.
**SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT**
Five-Year Time Limit for Science Courses Eliminated:
Pending final approval by the college, effective June 2012 and thereafter, the Nursing Department at Kapi‘olani Community College (KCC) will eliminate the five-year time limit for the science prerequisite and co-requisite courses for the ADN Program and LPN-RN Transition Program. Starting with those applicants for the ADN Program and LPN-RN Transition Program in the Spring 2013 semester and thereafter, students will no longer be required to complete their science prerequisite courses and co-requisite courses within five years of their application to the nursing program. The science prerequisite and co-requisite courses include ZOOL 141-141L, ZOOL 142-142L, MICR 130 and PHRM 203.
The five-year time limit policy is being eliminated, since students accepted into the ADN Program in the Fall 2012 and thereafter will be required to complete the NURS 212 – Pathophysiology course, which will focus on pathophysiological concepts that are basic to understanding illness and injury and the corresponding spectrum of human responses, which serve as a foundation for the formulation of clinical decisions and care planning.
Nursing Program Career Ladder and Licensure
A career ladder model is incorporated into the Associate in Science degree in Nursing program to provide students with an opportunity to acquire skills to become a nurse aide as well as obtain training and licensure to become a practical nurse and a registered nurse.
After completing the first semester within the ADN program, students acquire skills to become a nurse aide. After the first year and completing the pediatric nursing course within the ADN program, students are eligible to take the National Council of Licensure Examination for practical nurses (NCLEX-PN) examination to become licensed practical nurses. The Associate in Science Degree in Nursing Program prepares graduates for the National Council for Licensure Examination for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN) examination and to perform as entry level registered nurses.

The KCC ADN Program in its entirety with all complementary support services is offered each Fall and Spring at the KCC Diamond Head (DH) campus site and the Leeward Community College (LCC) satellite campus site starting in the Spring 2010. The KCC DH campus site is located in the Kōpiko Building at 4303 Diamond Head Road, Honolulu, HI 96816, while the LCC satellite campus site is located in the Health Science Building at 96-045 Ala Ike Street, Pearl City, HI 96782.

ADN Student Handbook
All new nursing students are required to familiarize themselves with the Nursing Department policies and procedures relative to the ADN Program as described within the KCC ADN Student Handbook. The handbook describes program policies relative academics, clinical performance, uniform regulations, employment, health and safety requirements, course progression, resolving student concerns, course withdrawal and readmissions, graduation, licensure, college policies, privacy rights, financial aid, disability support services, learning resource center and nursing laboratory guidelines for faculty and students.
Qualities Needed
Important qualities of a nurse include enjoy working with and caring for people as well as being personable, reassuring, patient, compassionate, honest and reliable. Other qualities include being able to accept, give and use constructive feedback; having good manual dexterity and coordination; being able to act quickly and effectively in emergencies; being able to speak and write well; being able to work independently and within a team; and being able to deal with a variety of emotional expressions.
In order to prepare for a nursing career and program, you will need to develop a strong background in math, science and English; acquire paid work experience with direct patient care within a hospital, nursing home, clinic or other health care setting; develop good communication, computer, logical thinking and time management skills; take health-related courses; and complete prerequisite courses.
Employment Outlook
There is a demand for nurses in the specialty areas and long-term care facilities. The average entry-level salary is $23 per hour and with experience $33 per hour or more.
